Foundation:The part of structure which is in direct contact with ground to which it transfer the load.The part of foundation which is in direct contact with sub soil is called footing.
Function of Foundation:
• To transfer load to ground which include dead load, live load,wind load.
• To transfer unequal load to ground equally.
• To provide a level surface to structure.
• To minimize the movement of soil to prevent structure from cracks or failure
Type of Foundation: The foundation is divided into 2 groups:
1.Shallow Foundation:The foundation which is very near to surface is called Shallow Foundation. These type of foundation is generally formed by open excavation.The depth is generally less than its width.
Types of Shallow foundation:Its is further divided into 4 types:-
• Strip footing
• Spread footing
• Combined footing
• Raft foundation or foorting
2.Deep Foundation:The foundation whcih is present deep from surface.It is not formed by open excavation. In these type of foundation, the depth of foundartion is greater than its width.
Type of Deep Foundation: It is further divide into types:
• Pile Foundation
• Pier Foundation
• Well Foundation or caissons
• Deep strip,rectangular or square foundation
